For the holidays in the Philippines, our plan was to chill out and keep the bikes packed away in their boxes until New Year's. And since we weren't spending them at home with family as usual, we decided to at least sync up with friends who, by coincidence, had booked a vacation here for the same dates.
We spent the first few days on the island of Bohol, home to a sanctuary for tiny tarsiers and the funny brown hills that rise out of the jungle like giant molehills.
Unfortunately, around this time we started feeling like some local virus was about to knock us out. The day before arriving on Bohol was really exhausting, and the body doesn't forget. High fevers soon followed too (up to 39°C for me at times, a bit less for Kika).
On the day we were supposed to travel from Bohol to Palawan, I was feeling a little better, but after a full day of transport by ferry, plane, and boxes in tow, and finally a van with a suicidal driver, we both ended up on antibiotics in the Palawan town of El Nido.
Over the holidays, together with our friends, we made our way through Bohol, El Nido in Palawan, and finally the island of Coron, from which we took a beautiful trip to the picturesque tropical Pass Island. It was a huge contrast, because these are all tourist destinations, completely different from our experiences in the Philippines so far. More western food, fewer interesting encounters with locals who are used to tourists here.
The bikes have been in their boxes for two whole weeks now, but it's time to put them back together and start the final leg of our trip through the Philippines.
