During the Greek leg of this trip, we really felt the power of covid. This whole trip actually came about as an escape from covid back in Slovakia, and it turned out to be an excellent choice.
As soon as the ferry landed in the Greek village of Igoumenitsa, we could feel that everything was strangely empty. Empty beaches, empty bars, empty restaurants, and even emptier roads. For a cyclist, it was pure bliss.
We started cycling in that spirit. On the beaches that followed, we gradually noticed that the restaurants had more staff than actual customers. As a result, the seasoned waiters practically raced to serve us, trying to fulfill our every unspoken wish.
Practically every night we slept somewhere random on a beach. The weather was amazing and there was hardly any need to book campsites. Maybe once or twice we took a room somewhere.
On one of these beaches we also met two guys who, like us, were traveling by bike, except they were hauling their own kayak along. They had a really big kayak, fully loaded with gear – a tent, sleeping bags, sleeping pads, and everything else needed for the trip. It was truly inspiring to listen to them talk about their experiences.
Our route took us along the Gulf of Corinth all the way to Greece's capital – Athens. Along the way we were lucky enough to see kitesurfers, photograph a beautiful sunrise, spend a night in a citrus grove, and even buy eggs from a local seller, almost every one of which had two yolks.
Athens charmed us with its history. We visited the Acropolis and the ancient amphitheater, and overall the city left us with the feeling of a very pleasant and progressive place.
Our trip ended here with a visit to the local National Garden, full of parrots, turtles, and other creatures.
We're glad you shared this trip with us, and see you again next time!
