After half a year of living in Italy, we'd really started missing our bikes. So we decided it was high time to bring them over to Ispra. Of course, we could have done it by car, train, or plane, but instead we thought: ... come on, they're bicycles.
So, fully loaded, we took the train from Bratislava-Petržalka to Munich, from where we set off on our bikes through picturesque hills and along Lake Constance all the way to Liechtenstein. We wanted to go through Liechtenstein mainly because we were curious what this tiny country was actually like. And I have to tell you, it really is the armpit of the world. Basically a miniature Switzerland tucked up against the Austrian border, where not much happens, but at least the nature is nice.
After Liechtenstein we continued through Switzerland, up the valley through Chur, and then climbed the San Bernardino mountain pass. On the way up we had relatively good luck with the weather, but on the way down it started to drizzle a little, so we had to ride carefully. The pass is absolutely perfect for bikes, though, since there's a tunnel underneath it that takes all the cars!
We spent the night after the pass a little further down the valley, by the ruins of an old castle, and the next day we reached Lake Maggiore and made it all the way to Ispra. The whole trip went off without any major problems, and the bikes were successfully delivered - mission accomplished.
