This trip was the last one we took while we were still Slovak residents. And what better destination to pick when you're about to move to Italy for the next few years? Italy, of course, you really need to get to know it properly. Plus, the food is good there.
But first we had to actually get to Italy. So we took a train a bit past Salzburg and hoped that the rain, which had been following us the whole way, would gradually clear up. And it did. The planned mountain pass, the Hochalpenstraße near Zell am See, turned out absolutely perfect. Weather 10 out of 10, no wind, plenty of sun. The pass sits at roughly 2500 meters, which is almost one Gerlach's worth of climbing. It winds right beneath Austria's highest mountain, the Grossglockner, and it's an absolute paradise for cyclists.
We thought it would be a real slog, but with good company and good weather, it flew by in no time. The following days were much the same, the weather really was on our side, and Austria's bike paths through the alpine valleys are simply gorgeous.
Italy, in the end, didn't disappoint. In Bolzano we met up with our friend George, who took us to his favorite restaurant, and later in Trento our friend Katka put us up. Thank you again so much for the bed and the washing machine!
After Trento we continued along Lago di Garda, where hundreds of windsurfers and kitesurfers were riding the great wind across the lake's surface. The route took us along the western shore of Garda, which is dotted with little tunnels offering views over the lake.
Next came the city of Brescia and a pleasant spot of wild camping by Lago d'Iseo. This leg's final stop was Bergamo, from where we took a train to Milan. We visited the local Duomo, had the famous Milanese risotto, and got a bit of a feel for the place, since we'd be moving there before long.
From Milan we took a train to Genoa, where a ferry to Sardinia was waiting for us.
