For this second leg, I took a boat from Phuket over to Koh Phi Phi. I left the bike at the hotel, booking the room for one extra day cost about 5 dollars, so the bike had it pretty good too.
If you want to see paradise on earth, go to one of the Thai islands, Phi Phi works just fine. White sand, gorgeous beaches, good food, and friendly people. Since I was never going to sit still on a beach for long, though, I went hiking and then rented a kayak, which took me to a few forgotten little coves. Still, one night on Phi Phi was plenty for me. The road calls.
So I headed back to Phuket, where I managed to find a local guy who repaired electronics. I finally got the chance to have my broken dynamo fixed, for the last few days it had been riding along more as decoration than as an actual power source.
If you head north out of Phuket, you're almost certainly on the road that runs directly between two national parks, Khao Sok and Nam Tok Song Praek. That means postcard-perfect views on both sides of the road, jagged peaks thick with green vegetation, and almost no tourists in sight. It was one of those roads where you realize this is exactly why you travel by bike in the first place.
In Khao Sok National Park I headed into the jungle and took a boat out among the islands. This leg was defined mostly by misty mornings, chance encounters with elephants, and generally very pleasant cycling infrastructure.
In the end, Thailand left me with the feeling of being one of the best countries for cycling out there, an easy first rating of 10/10. If you're looking for somewhere to take a bike trip over Christmas or through a harsh European winter, don't hesitate. Thailand is simply excellent for it.
